Spyderco Mule MT01 52100 - Rethink!

The first Spyderco Mule produced!
Spyderco Mule Team 1 (52100) ~ MT01

I've had this on the bench for a while but I've decided I don't like it and am going to strip the handle off.

This is made of carbon fibre closest to the blade, Orange G10 on top then another layer of carbon fibre on top. The orange I used was too thick so it hasn't come out as the vision in my head. I have been chasing the shape round left on the top layer of carbon fibre trying to get it to look in a way I would like but I think that sometimes you should just stop!

The steel is a carbon steel so can rust and stain so will show some history after using it a while - I think a wood will be nice but I still like the idea of the layers.
I need to see what I have but I'm thinking of brushed wenge to highlight the grain with a single lighter wood liner between the wenge and the steel.

A Parang - Part 1

These are a couple of Malaysian parangs in the style popularised by Ray Mears.

I was asked to put  a handle on one the same as the large one shown.

The tangs are extremely short. While I don't mind a short stick tang on smaller knives, I think something longer is required on a chopper. I did suggest in this instance that I could weld an extension to the tang but the request was to make it a full tang.

So a bit of a jump forward after a bit of cutting and welding of a piece of mild steel....

and then grinding it back so the curve at the rear is in the right place.

Compared against the new owners hand (quite a size difference between the two of us!)

I then fit some pieces of Laburnum that I've had seasoning for a number of years, with a spacer of micarta to extend the curve at the back down. I had left lots of material to reduce down later.

 and then, disaster!

Back to it after Christmas I did some rough shaping down...

but then flipping it over, gaps have appeared. It was glued solid and tight before - I believe that my very cold garage has caused pieces to move.

Extremely frustating but those scales have now been boiled off ready for new ones.

Laburnum soup!

Tora Indra 32cm Kukri Re-handle

I was asked to rehandle a kukri for a gentleman that the original had been damaged at the butt end.

It's a traditional Nepalese Kukri but I did say that I wouldn't be able to replicate the handle shape with the original ridge shape to it. (Personally I don't find that style comfortable for my hand anyway)

I decided to use Elm for the handle. Not a fancy wood (although I did manage to use a piece with some knots and rippling grain) but solid and dependable. The dark colour is due to soaking in Danish Oil for two days.

It's hard to tell in the photo but I was trying to show the very subtle hollow face of the blade.
Brilliant craftsmanship.

I didn't take many pictures of the build but a few snippets from when I did remember to take the camera out.

I made a rough copy of the tang so I could burn the tang hole in without running the blade heat treatment.

The piece of Elm was very over sized which meant quite a bit of wastage but I wanted to make sure that there was enough to give a good full handle.

Ganzo G712 - the budget version of the Benchmade Bedlam

Pros:
- strong, sturdy folder with an excellent fit and finish
- unique, up-swept persian style blade (ideal for self defense)
- 0.141" (3.6 mm) thick blade
- grippy, curved G-10 handle
- it comes with a pouch

Cons:
- big pocket clip
- no lanyard hole

As opposed to the Benchmade Bedlam the G712 comes without the steel backspacer (skull crusher) at the bottom of the handle which would contain the lanyard hole too.
