SOLD: Bushcrafter in Amboyna Burr

The blade is in a classic Woodlore style by TLIM in NC6 steel. It's 3mm thick with a bainite heat treatment.
Blade length is 10cm with an overall length of 21.5cm.

The handle is by myself using professionally stabilised Amboyna Burr over black liners. They are secured with two ton epoxy and have two 8mm brass tubes.

I have not made a sheath at this stage to allow someone to either make their own or in case they have a preferred leatherworker (or kydex, if that takes your fancy!). I can make a leather sheath at an extra cost - message me to discuss it.

THIS IS NOW SOLD

If I get to a point of making a sheath not on request, it will be withdrawn and the price adjusted.

Some testing.

While finishing up another knife, I had the strop out and needed to scrape the leather clean - I grabbed a knife I had committed as being junk because I had damaged the handle, so now has to do all the rubbish jobs in the workshop.

I realised I hadn't tested a knife hard for a while.

Testing to destruction is essential to check the steel heat treat. Obviously not every knife but an occasional one. Some things can only be learned from snapping the blade and looking inside!

This one is an old one and somethings have changed in what I do now but i figured I might as well go for it anyway....

I'm a bit annoyed at myself that I didn't try bending it before hitting it with the hammer but not to worry!

There's always the next one...

Svord Peasant re-build Part 4 (I think)

Some projects just run on and on. Commissions push non-commissioned work down the pile so it's easy for things to get forgotten about.

With this one,the parts had been scattered around various boxes for a while, which didn't help, but even so, the first installment was August 2010!!

Svord Peasant re-build Part 1
Svord Peasant re-build Part 2 and other bits
Svord Peasant re-build Part 3

I've skipped on a bit since Part 3 to where I just picked it up now.

Back spacer glued in place so that the blade edge doesn't come into contact with it.

The back spacer was then drilled, then the other side glued and pinned on.

A 'temporary' pivot out of a drill bit at the moment as that's the last part I need to find (or pinch off another Svord Peasant)

Top of the wood needs reducing down....

...so that it's flush with the blade tang.

And then similar to the bottom of the handle for the blade edge.

Plenty more to do yet, but it's a step in the right direction....

A re-handled Lofty Wiseman Survival Tool

There are a number of survival tools based around the design that Lofty Wiseman drew up years ago. There are at least three that I know of (Trueways, Chris Caine and Staniforths) but there may be more. This one is the Staniforths one.

To do things backwards, this is how it ended up...........

and this is how it left the factory (stock shot)........

So this is how it arrived with me - scales removed, guard removed and a start of the handle profile being re-profiled.

I've shown some of the work I put into it on other posts.

The handle was changed to extend all the way back to cover the whole tang and hand the curves changed slightly and the guard left off. The blasted finish that was used to hide all the rough grind marks was removed then shined up. The tang needed re-tapering to make it flat.

The new handle was made from Yew with black liners to match another knife by the new owner.

The new handle lay-out makes it versatile for gripping, depending on the task. The curves at the back grip the hand when chopping but you can also hold the knife further forward for finer detail work.

Spyderco Mule MT13P Elmax in Horse Chestnut Burr

Another Spyderco Mule but this time a different steel and a wood handle rather than micarta.

This one also has mosaic pins and red liners so it looks a bit more fancy than the previous one I did ( here ) but just as durable as the wood is stabilised.

Spyderco Mule Team 13 - Elmax

Spyderco’s thirteenth Mule Team Project installment uses Elmax steel produced by Böhler-Uddeholm Steel of Kapfenberg, Austria.

Böhler first sold steel in North America in 1925 by providing European-made steels to toolmakers, manufacturing industries and construction jobs in the U.S.  Their Elmax is an alloy composed using powdered metallurgic technology that was designed specifically for high-tech applications, primarily for use in the electronics industry.  It contains elevated levels of chromium, vanadium-molybdenum that deem it a well-tailored fit for making knife blades.  These elements translate into resistance to wear and corrosion and it has a homogenous grain structure making it malleable when grinding and forming.
