A denim micarta handle started.

A new handle for a broken palette knife has been requested!

Rather than attaching some new metal for a tang, I decided to just mold a micarta handle in place on the blade. I put a hole in the blade and will try fit a pin through it when the handle is in place.

The blade, old handle and pieces of material cut ready for laying up. I decided that adding some red layers will look nice.

All layed up with resin, ready for a weighted board to go on top. The blade is sandwiched inbetween.

This morning, all dry!

Not quite thick enough when compared tot he original handle - I will just add some extra layers of denim to the sides.

Two damascus kiridashis in progress.

The plain looking kiridashi on the left is an off cut from another knife blade I'm working on. It's my own damascus made from 15n20 and 20c steel. I have done a test etch and the pattern looks promising. It needs hardening still.

The kiridashi on the right is made from cable damascus and has been welded to a piece of rebar. I'm thinking of trying to soak some rope in epoxy and use it for a handle.

A Jungle Parang - now full tang

There are some pieces of work that you connect with and some that fight you all the way. This one was a fighter. This is the second set of scales it had and they nearly needed to come off too.

For the handle pins, I was going to pein straight brass rods over so it held the scales on, as well as the glue. When I started to rivet them over, it all went wrong with all the pins. Very messy with bits of brass chipping off and not diverting evenly. I don't know why I carried on after the first was going wrong!!

I ended up drilling them all out and managed to replace them with some large loveless bolts.

I welded a piece of mild steel to the small stick tang of the parang to make it a full tang. Micarta liners were made from some old denim jeans.
The scales are an unknown hardwood that I have brushed to add some gentle texture. I soaked the scales overnight in Danish Oil that has given it a lovely colour.

"There are no mistakes in knifemaking, just design changes."

The subject line is a quote I heard a long time ago and it's very true.

I have just had to do a design change on the EnZo necker I'm working on.

So, I have the front micarta parts of the handle glued on and the rear pieces of cocobolo are ready to be stuck on.

I hadn't realised I wasn't very generous with the size of the cocobolo I cut and then when I've tidied up the edge that'll join upto the micarta, it's left the back of the knife tang sticking out the back of the wood.

Damn!

Now I did consider just chucking the existing bits of wood in a box to maybe used on something else and start again but I thought something more interesting could be done.

I brought a few options in and showed them to my wife and this is what we settled on.

It's a piece of nickel silver as a spacer and I think it'll add a real nice touch to it.

I think this'll be a good design change!

First crossdraw sheath

My first attempt at a crossdraw sheath was completed just before the weekend but I've only just got chance to put this up now.

The sheath is worn on the belt so that it sits almost parallel to the belt, hence the crossdraw idea.

The spec was for the sheath to cover the knife completely and a lanyard will be looped at the front of the handle to aid withdrawal - I can withdraw it ok without the lanyard and it's still secure enough when in the sheath.
