Mancave Monday 17/2/2014

A less productive night as not feeling up to much. Just a bit of drilling really but all good prep for future projects.

A dozen holes through the pink G10/carbon fibre for the Enzoneck knife....

A few holes in the Ironwood for the bushcraft knife....

and one big hole in some Bog Oak for the Kukhri handle....

Mancave Monday 10/2/2014

So a Just Like That / JLT knife arrived this week ready for a rehandling. It arrived with Reindeer Antler scales which were just too slippy in use. A good sized handle on this one!

A brief spell in some boiling water and..........

...off they pop!

The new scales will be in a synthetic of some sort. I'm waiting to here what has been chosen out of this lot:

This is the Bones61 kitchen knife from last week that has now been glued and the tufnol shaped. It still needs a bit of tweaking and sanding.

The micarta liners have been glued up on the rasp knife shown last week. I shall see if that has worked this evening!

Next I started looking at some other blades I have kicking around as I realised I had quite a few to work on that are unclaimed (over 100!)

So at the top of the picture is a Woodlore / Alan Wood type knife. I was considering the purple box elder scales that it's sat on but have decided they will go on the utility knife underneath them.
the damascus knife on the left will get Bog Oak scales with red liners.
The enzo neck knife is going to have pink G10 and carbon fibre scales.

 Enzo necker:

Woodlore type knife which will have African Ironwood scales with red liners and brass pins.

Two I found which I think are going to get theit handles removed!!

I also cut the tang down on the kukhri from last week to a stick tang, cut some hessian scaking for spacers and also some Cocobolo. It will have Bog Oak for the remainder of the handle.

Mancave Monday 3/2/2014

My usual mancave nights are a Monday so in a bid to get back to more regular blogging again, I'm going to try a quick synopsis of what I work on each week, rather than just waiting until a project is finished.

So a trio of knives ready for handles to be stripped off and re-built.

So first off the kukhri - current horn handles that are a bit too short....

...and no flare at the back so it feels like it wants to slip away from the hand, even with the finger grooves.

I suspected that a simple drilling of the pins would result in the old handle coming off quite easily. The old pins were obviously aluminium in a split brass sleeve, rivetted over and the glue holding the scales was virtually non existant.

Then the dive knife. I was a bit more wary of this one! The bolster on the back of this one is a heck of a lump and it puts the balance quite far back.

 So hacksaw away.......

and all the way to the bottom...

then a bit chiselling....

I then got a shock when out popped the blade and the butt cap! no tang between them.

Very secure in manufacture but it'll make a rehandle interesting!!!

After that I drilled and started to shape a set of tufnol scales for a Bones61 kitchen knife, then a bit of glue and some loveless bolts and that won't be budging.

A rasp knife sat on the side then caught my eye and I decided to cut some Wenge for a handle.

The bumps and holes left from the rasp teeth would cause fitting the handle to be problematic so I'll be fitting some micarta liners in place out of some white hessian sheet.

Oh, and I couldn't resist starting to shape the canadian-esque doodle.....

Some fresh steel & a new doodle.

I had a delivery of some EN9 bars the other day (with extra carbon than standard EN9) and couldn't resist getting the sharpie out.

It's frustrating as I have plenty of other jobs to get on with so i'm resisting grinding this out! It has a slight Grohmann / BRKT Canadian knife feel to it in my mind - I just doodled and that's what happened.
The tang will be extended using some micarta / G10. It'll be plenty strong enough.

XL Nessmuk in Macassar Ebony & Cocobolo

I recently realised that I hadn't posted this knife up that I had completed a few years ago.

The blade is an XL Nessmuk with a flandi edge by Duncan Chandler / FGYT of Dorset Woodland Blades.
The handle is by myself in striped Macassar Ebony and cocobolo with stainless steel pins.
The sheath has been made by Lucky Lee / Lee Bennett
