Stacked Birch bark knife in progress.

I've wanted to try a stacked birch bark handle for some time.

This is all the bark cut and ready for gluing up! I'm going to cut some spacers of Laburnum and put them in part way down the handle. Fingers crossed it look ok!!

A Kiridashi or two.

Some more old work.

These are Kiridashis.
A Kiridashi is a general purpose Japanese knife. Many believe them to be traditionally  used for marking out woodwork because of the single bevel. I like to think of them in the same category as a Stanley knife.

Just some fun with scrap metal.

Rabbit Dispatcher

I've come across some pictures of older bits of work from a few years back

First off to post up is this Rabbit dispatcher.

As a design it may not be immediately obvious what it is to be used for. I made it for my Father-in-Law as he flies a Harris Hawk. When the bird has a rabbit pinned between it's talons, it's tricky to dispatch the rabbit and stop it wriggling around while also dealing with the bird.

Every surface of this has been rounded over except the chisel like tip. This makes it safe to slip between the Harris Hawk's talons and push the tip against the neck or head of the rabbit, then insert it through the rabbit.

I had planned for the 'guard' to go between the first and second finger but either hold will work.

The handle is tufnol with red vulcanised fibre liners. It is held on with a loveless bolt at the front and a hollow brass tube at the rear. The tufnol is paler in colour than I would have liked -before shaping it was darker. Hopefully over time it will darken down after being subjected to blood, sweat, dirt and oil!

A Green River knife glued up and ready for shaping.

All glued up and ready for shaping.....

This is a traditional shaped Green River style blade made by Chris Grant. I've stuck a handle on in Apple wood - this is some super light weight stuff and I just know when I soak this in warm oil that it's going to take lots on board and darken off a lot. It's going to be great!
I've taken a bit of a gamble with the look of the pins. As the wood is so light, I decided that I wanted a strong contrast so instead of using the normal brass or stainless steel pins, I want for black carbon fibre - not so traditional!!

A Movember Wood Spirit

Not quite the normal knife content....

If you don't know what Movember is, have a read here: http://uk.movember.com/
It's essentially the growing of moustaches in November to raise awareness of male health problems. I believe it started off focussing on prostrate cancer but has expanded into other areas as well now.
The challenge is to start the month clean shaven then just grow a 'tache only. i partook a couple of years back.

I'm not growing one this year so instead while thinking about doing some carving, the idea of attempting a wood spirit came to mind.

This is a work in progress but I have serious 'tache envy!!

To keep it on theme for knives, all the carving has been done with this wee whittler so far. A frosts blade that I handled some time ago in crosscut Yew & Sallow Root with a brass spacer and bolster.

New sheath in progress with Crazy Legs stamping!

Just a quick picture of a sheath in progress for the cocobolo & walnut chopper I just sold.
I've had the 'Crazy Legs' stamp for a while but not had the chance to use it. It's quite a large stamp so I felt it needed to be used on something big and this sheath seemed ideal.

I love the look!

Just the welt, belt loops, dye and stitching to go now!!!
(This is going to have a dangler style belt loop)
