Enzo Nordic with Kingwood & Yellow Mallee Burr handle

Another old one from 2009!

As the title, this is an Enzo Nordic blade which is 95mm long.

The handle has a nickle silver bolster with purple Kingwood behind it and Kingwood at the back, both pieces with the grain running cross ways to the tang.

Between the Kingwood is a piece of Yellow Mallee burr which has nice swirls and eyes - it looks like contours on a map!

More on the Birch bark knife

The Birch bark knife has been stacked and cooked in the oven to glue it together with the resins from within the bark itself.
This video shows how well it's stuck - there is no man made glue in this.

Also, a video of an old master at work showing how it's really done making a traditional puukko!

Stacked Birch bark knife in progress.

I've wanted to try a stacked birch bark handle for some time.

This is all the bark cut and ready for gluing up! I'm going to cut some spacers of Laburnum and put them in part way down the handle. Fingers crossed it look ok!!

A Kiridashi or two.

Some more old work.

These are Kiridashis.
A Kiridashi is a general purpose Japanese knife. Many believe them to be traditionally  used for marking out woodwork because of the single bevel. I like to think of them in the same category as a Stanley knife.

Just some fun with scrap metal.

Rabbit Dispatcher

I've come across some pictures of older bits of work from a few years back

First off to post up is this Rabbit dispatcher.

As a design it may not be immediately obvious what it is to be used for. I made it for my Father-in-Law as he flies a Harris Hawk. When the bird has a rabbit pinned between it's talons, it's tricky to dispatch the rabbit and stop it wriggling around while also dealing with the bird.

Every surface of this has been rounded over except the chisel like tip. This makes it safe to slip between the Harris Hawk's talons and push the tip against the neck or head of the rabbit, then insert it through the rabbit.

I had planned for the 'guard' to go between the first and second finger but either hold will work.

The handle is tufnol with red vulcanised fibre liners. It is held on with a loveless bolt at the front and a hollow brass tube at the rear. The tufnol is paler in colour than I would have liked -before shaping it was darker. Hopefully over time it will darken down after being subjected to blood, sweat, dirt and oil!
